The Area

BRIGHSTONE
The picturesque village of Brighstone is set beneath the rolling chalk downs and is within one mile of the coast. It combines the convenience of local shops and places to eat (it even has a small village museum) with being in the the quieter and more rural West Wight. It makes a good base for country walks, swimming in the sea and visiting attractions. Like the pretty neighbouring villages, it has a beautiful church, dating, in the case of Brighstone, partly from Norman times.

The village has good local shops within a minute's walk, providing for most needs for a holiday. The Village Shop supplies most groceries, fresh fruit and vegetables, fresh bread, wine and fresh meat. The newsagent's serves as a general village store. Both shops are open late in summer. There is also a National Trust shop which sells guide books and gifts, a Post Office, a hairdresser and a public telephone. The bus stop is nearby in the main street.

SHOPPING - IOW
Mottistone Manor Farm shop in the next village sells fresh produce and their own meat. Freshwater (15 minutes by car) has a good selection of high street shops and a couple of supermarkets. Newport (the island's capital – 20 minutes by car) has a large selection of good local and national high-street shops and several supermarkets.

EATING OUT - IOW
There are many places to eat out on the Island. Brighstone has the Three Bishops across the lane from The Cottage (a quiet pub with real ales) and Seven (a cafe/restaurant, open all day). The neighbouring villages of Hulverstone and Shorwell both have attractive pubs that serve good food. There are other good places to eat further afield, such as The New Inn at Shalfleet which serves locally caught fish.
